IRV DOCKTOR : 1918-2008

Irv Docktor was a serious painter and illustrator ever since he was in high school. He illustrated many novels, children’s books, and record albums, and had his own gallery in Greenwich Village for many years. He exhibited widely at numerous art shows throughout the northeast, and won many prizes at juried shows. He was also a beloved teacher. He taught art for almost 50 years at the Newark School of Fine Art, and for 15 years at the High School of Art and Design in NYC. In the early part of his career he illustrated book jackets such as War and Peace, The Brothers Karamazov, Twelve Great Mysteries of Edgar Allan Poe, We Were There at The Battle for Bataan, and his tour de force, The American Folklore Book. He graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia, and won a scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts), and The Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA. When he graduated college, World War II had begun. Because of his artistic skill, he was trained in photography and served for five years in a map-making unit in Australia and the Philippines, in the Technical Intelligence Team.

The Glenn Miller and Beethoven record album originals are housed at the Society of Illustrators Museum in New York City.
